The Story:
The Last 5 Years is a musical love story for a new generation. The story explores a five year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hyatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy's sotry is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage,) and Jamie's is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met.) Their characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their timelines intesect.

CAST
MELANIE PORTNEY

Melanie is overjoyed to be once again joining Wine Country Theatre with this beautiful show, The Last 5 Years. Melanie is a Paso native and graduate of the UCLA school of Theatre, Film, and Television. She has performed at the Geffen, the Celebration, and Rouge theatres in L.A. She appeared in SlO Little Theatre's Singing in the Rain as Lina Lamont, A Chorus Line as Kristine, and in WCT's Last of the Red Hot Lovers as Bobby Michelle-- all talented actresses with excruciatingly awful singing voices. Melanie would like to express her love and gratitude to her mum, her director, Gregg, music director John and her co-star Cody Pettit for their support, talent, and passion and to dedicate her performance to the person who taught her to tell stories and find humor in pain, her dad Mark Portney (1964-2015).

CODY PETTIT

Cody Pettit is a Cambria local who has been performing in and around SLO county for over ten years. He has always wanted to be a part of a production of The Last Five Years and he is very grateful for the opportunity to help tell the story. Favorite past roles include Frankie in Forever Plaid, Mortimer in Arsenic and Old Lace, Princeton in Avenue Q, Leaf Coneybear in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Bobby Strong in Urinetown, the title role in Tarzan, and Al in A Chorus Line (Where he first worked with costar Melanie Portney and director Gregg Wolff) among others. This is his second show with Wine Country Theatre, the first being I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change! in 2014. Cody wants to thank everyone who has made this show happen, in particular Gregg for his passion and motivation and John for his dedication to the marriage of music and story. Enjoy the show!
